Mills Concert Hall
a hundred stars do not equal one moon
performance by jonathan segel and alyssa wilmot
this piece consists of three parts, 5', 15' 20'.
the music for the first part is notated and pulsating, second part's
music is instructional improvisation, third part is a combination of
both, culminating in pulse again. the dance score uses these and
contrasting elements to create a exploratory narrative that
encompasses the boundaries of the perceptions of space and time,
utilizing the entire performance and audience space of the mills
college concert hall.
the dancers embody concepts of motion versus stillness incorporating
a gestural language based on manipulated texts used by the composer
in the score. these gestures explore ideas of meaning and language -
two additional performers on stage directly translate text items into
different cultural sign languages.
in addition to the visual elements of the dancers and signers, there
will be a video projection on the large screen at the rear of the
auditorium, a computer generated, slowly changing color field that
will wash over the performers..
